Take Me on a Boat Ride Through the Sky

Meet Gela, the laid-back fashionista behind the Manila-based blog Boat Ride Through the Sky.  Gela’s blog is both a sartorial scrapbook and a virtual diary that allows her to preserve good memories, mainly for herself and luckily for readers around the world.  We love Gela’s love of hats and the fact that she takes food very seriously. (Me too!)  Did we mention that she speaks about six languages too?  Read on to find out how Gela envisions her “hypothetical wedding” and her recommendations on must-try Filipino dishes.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I’m 22, and I’m from Manila, Philippines.  I think my blog’s sidebar sums me up pretty well: “an International Relations graduate and a  sometimes writer… going through a bit of quarter life crisis.”  I like dressing up, hoarding pretty things, popping bubble wrap, and eating to my heart’s content.

Describe your signature style.

I never know what to say to this!  I guess, generally, I like to keep it simple and comfortable yet feminine, but there are other days when I like to try something different.  I really don’t think about it too much, and just go for what feels good and natural for me.

Can you tell us about your blog?  What is the significance of the name?

Other than posting about what I wear, my blog is really about sharing a little bit of my life, too.  Not that it’s any interesting at all, but I want to put a story behind every post to keep track of good memories, mainly for myself.  I got the name “boat ride through the sky” off of a lyric from the song The Bomb by Bitter:Sweet.  I guess it just stuck.

What is style/fashion like in Manila?

Style in Manila is pretty laid-back, I think, considering the weather here can get pretty erratic, like it can be really hot in the morning, and then, all of a sudden, there are heavy rains in the afternoon.  But since we are a tropical country, and it’s humid most of the time, comfort is an important factor.  Although, we do pretend sometimes that we have four seasons, but actually, we only know rain and sunshine.  It kind of limits us in a way in terms of fashion (ie: wearing tights or fur coats is just plain impractical); however it doesn’t stop us from dressing our best.

I love that you and your boyfriend take food “very seriously” and plan your dates around food!  And I love all the food pictures on your blog!  I’m not familiar with Filipino dishes. What are some must-try dishes?

My personal favorites: lechon (roasted pig), sisig (sizzling platter of minced pork meat), and sinigang (meat/seafood and vegetables simmered in sour broth, usually tamarind based).

You write that you “plan your hypothetical wedding” when you’re idle.  Can you share some details of your “hypothetical wedding?”

I have too many scenarios in my head; to be honest, it’s ridiculous.  But the one thing I’m sure of is that I want it to have an abundant number of flowers.

If you could raid three fashion bloggers’ closets, who would you pick and why?

Annabel’s of Blushing Ambition for her simple and basic pieces, Hannah’s of Hannah and Landon for her amazing lingerie collection, and Avalonne Lou Summers’ of The Girl from HK, LDN & SF for her vintage-inspired outfits.
